The airline began operating in 1988 as a private company and known first by the brand name Seoul Air International. The airline began operating in 1962 after the South Korean government replaced Korean National Airlines with the new brand name Korean Air Lines. The airline was privatised in 1969, with the new parent company the Hanjin Group taking over.
