The airline began operations recently in 2004, with the backing of the major shareholder, the large Australian airline Qantas. In 2005 Jetstar Asia completed the merger with another Singapore based budget airline called Valuair, making it more competitive in the Asian region. The last years have been financially successfull for Jetstar Asia with the better use of planes in service. This progress has been recognised at the 2012 Skytrax's World Airlines Awards,held in the UK, placing Jetstar Asia as the third Best Asian Low Cost Airline.

Tiger Airways has made great progress in only a few years with the help of Singapore Airlines, being a stakeholder in the budget airline. At the 2012 Skytrax Airline Awards,held in the UK, Tiger Airways was recognised as the sixth Best Asian Low Cost Airline.
