Lot Polish Airlines is the national carrier of Poland,with its headquarters based in Warsaw. The airline began operating as a state owned organisation in 1929,making it one of the oldest airlines in the world. The year 1989 was a significant year marking the end of the communist system in Poland and allowing the airline to acquire western aircraft. LOT made steady progress with the expansion of routes worldwide reaching North America and the Far East. The airline in recent years has been restructuring with new planes and methods to be able to compete with the other national carriers.
LOT is considered a 3 star airline with an aircraft fleet of 55 planes ( Aug 2011) travelling to 92 destinations, with a large short haul network. The safety record of the airline before 1989, when Poland was under the communist system was not good,with many incidents and accidents resulting in many fatalities. Hijackings often occurred during the communist period and ended with the fall of the communist state. In recent years, the record of incidents and accidents is a good standard,with only an incident in Nov 2011 when a flight from New York to Warsaw had a an emergency landing,with no fatalities due to the skill of the aircrew. There are two categories of ticket available - Business and Economy on flights. The cabin service and conditions are a good standard,although inflight entertainment does not score as well.
LOT provides travellers with a good standard of air travel and is good value for the short haul network available and at attractive prices. This is an airline which is making progress to compete with the other national carriers.
