Aeromexico is the national flag carrier airline for Mexico with its headquarters based in Mexico City. The airline, known first as Aeronaves de Mexico, began operating in 1934, with domestic and international scheduled flights. The airline grew steadily in the following years, acquiring smaller airlines and increasing its domestic network. In 1972 the airline was nationalised and changed its brand name to the current Aeromexico. The following years were financially difficult for the airline with high fuel costs and a global economic downturn. The government decided to privatise the airline and in 2007 was acquired by the banking group - Citigroup.
Aeromexico is considered a 3 star airline with an aircraft fleet of 107 planes (Dec 2011) and travelling to 78 destinations. The safety record of the airline in recent years is good, with no incidents/accidents recorded, although in Sep 2009 an internal Aeromexico flight had a hijack attempt made resulting in no injuries to those on board and the arrest of the hijackers involved. There are two ticket categories available - Business and Economy Class on flights. The cabin service and conditions are a good standard, although the customer support does not score as high. The inflight entertainment available is good with the newer planes having individual TV monitors, showing video on demand,audio channels,internet and games options.
