Air Malta is the national airline of Malta with headquarters based in Luqa and owned by the Maltese Government . The airline began operating in 1974, after being formed from several private airlines and guided by the international carriers PIA (Pakistan International Airlines ) and BEA (British European Airways). Air Malta grew slowly over the following years, increasing the size of the aircraft fleet, air routes and in the last decade introducing new planes into service. At the 2012 Skytrax World Airline Awards,held in the UK, Air Malta was rated sixth Best Southern European Airline.
Air Malta is considered a 3 star airline with a small aircraft fleet of 12 planes ( June 2012 ) and travelling to 37 destinations. The safety record of the airline is good with no recent incidents or accidents recorded to date. The cabin service and conditions are a good standard with good passenger approval. Inflight entertainment is limited as flights are mostly short haul. There are two categories of ticket available on flights - Business and Economy Class.
