El Al is the national carrier of the state of Israel with heaquarters based at Ben Gurion International Airport, near the capital city of Tel Aviv. The airline began operating in 1948 as a state owned company, with a small number of planes. Over the following decades El Al grew and expanded the aircraft fleet to reach worldwide destinations. In 2003 the first steps to the privatisation of the airline were taken and completed in 2005. Security is a major issue for El Al and there is high emphasis on checking passengers and baggage very thoroughly with the use of the latest technology. The airline has special air marshals flying under cover on flights, with concealed firearms to protect passengers from possible hijacking attempts.
El Al is considered a 3 star airline with an aircraft fleet of 43 planes ( Dec 2011 ) and travelling to 36 destinations. The safety record is good as would be expected for this airline, with no recent incidents or accidents recorded. The cabin service and conditions are a good standard.
