  Garuda Indonesia is the national carrier of Indonesia,with its headquarters based at Tangerang,near Jakarta,the capital city of Indonesia.The airline began operating in 1949,known then as Garuda Indonesia Airways. The word garuda comes from Buddist mythology and means 'mystic giant bird'. The airline made good progress over the following years expanding in size but suffered a European Union ban at the beginning of the 21st century,due to safety standards not meeting the European Union requirements.In 2009,the European Union lifted the safety ban imposed as a result of the efforts made by Garuda Indonesia to rebuild its reputation,investing in new planes,new livery,new staff uniforms and new practices to improve the airline. These changes were also recognised at Skytrax's 2010 Airline Awards held at Hamburg,where Garuda Indonesia were awarded the World's Most Improved Airline Award.

  Garuda Indonesia is considered a 4 star airline with an aircraft fleet of 81 planes (Jan 2012) and travelling to 49 destinations. The safety record of the airline is good although there have been two recent accidents.The most recent in March 2007 involved a Garuda Indonesia flight crashing at Yogyakarta International Airport,with the deaths of 21 people.There are two categories of ticket available- Business and Economy Class on flights.The cabin service and conditions are a high standard in all cabin areas,with a high passenger approval. The inflight entertainment is also a high standard,with individual TV monitors showing videos available on demand,TV programmes,music and games in all cabin areas.

  Indonesia Air Asia is an Indonesian budget airline,with its headquarters based in Jakarta. The airline, originally known as Awair,began operating in 2000. The airline in the early years covered the domestic routes of Indonesia but in 2005 the airline became part of the Air Asia group of airlines, changing its name to Indonesia Air Asia. The Air Asia group of airline companies set the standard for low cost airline travel having received the 2011 Skytrax's Airline Award for World's Best Low Cost Airline and also Best Asian Low Cost Airline,held in Paris.

  Indonesia Air Asia is considered a 3 star airline with a small modern aircraft fleet of 17 planes (Mar 2012) and travelling to 13 destinations,all in Indonesia. The safety record of the airline is very good with no incidents/accidents recorded to date. There is only one category of ticket available - Economy Class on flights.The cabin service and conditions are a good standard for a low cost airline. Inflight entertainment is limited as flights are nearly all short haul. The airline's website is user friendly and easy to make a flight booking.
