Icelandair is the national carrier of Iceland, with its headquarters based at the capital city of Reykjavik. The airline,known then as Flugfelag, began operations in 1937 and concentrated on domestic flights in the early years. In 1979 Flugfelag merged with the other main Icelandic airline Loftleioir, which had mostly international routes. The new airline chose Icelandair as the new brand name and offered domestic and international destinations. Icelandair was well placed as a stopover on the transatlantic route, becoming popular with travellers from the USA visiting the European cities. In recent years Icelandair has had to face a national financial crisis (2008-11) and also a local disruptive volcano eruption, resulting in European airspace being closed down during the 2010 summer season.
Icelandair is considered a 3 star airline with a small aircraft fleet of 19 planes and travelling to 32 destinations. The safety record of the airline is good with no recent significant incidents/accidents recorded. There are three ticket categories of ticket available - Business,Economy Comfort and Economy Class on flights. The cabin service and conditions are a good standard. Inflight entertainment is a good standard on some flights, with free video on demand available on individual TV monitors. Economy Class has only buy on board catering available. The airline's website is a user friendly design and easy to make a flight booking.
