Air France is the national carrier of France, with its headquarters based in Paris. The airline was founded in 1933 and has grown into one of the largest airlines in the world. One of the major airline historic landmarks was the development jointly with British Airways of the supersonic plane Concorde,which began operating in 1976 until 2003 and becoming an airline icon. In recent years Air France has acquired two French domestic airlines - Air Inter and UTA, to become the dominant domestic airline in France. In 2004 Air France merged with KLM, forming one of the world's largest airline units but both continuing to trade under their own brand names.
Air France is considered a 4 star airline, with a large airline fleet of 253 planes (Nov 2011) and travelling to 256 destinations. The safety record of this large airline in recent years is good although there have been three incidents in recent years,two of which have resulted in fatal crashes. In 2000, an Air France Concorde flight crashed after take off, due to debris on the runaway at Paris airport and in 2009 another Air France flight crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near Brazil and which is still under investigation.
There are four categories of ticket available on flights - First,Business,Premium Economy and Economy Class. The cabin service and conditions are a good standard with the quality of catering a high standard with champagne available as a complimentary drink in all classes.
