Ethiopian Airlines is the national carrier of Ethiopia with headquarters based at Bole International Airport, close to the capital city of Addis Ababa. The airline was founded in 1945 by the Ethiopian Government and with the help of the American airline TWA began to operate a year later. By 1971 Ethiopian Airlines was running the airline operation without any western assistance and expanding in size of aircraft fleet and destination routes. The airline has made good progress in recent years and has had good financial results. At the 2012 Skytrax World Airline Awards,Ethiopian Airlines were rated the seventh Best African Airline.
Ethiopian Airlines is considered a 3 star airline with an aircraft fleet of 42 planes ( Aug 2012 ) and travelling to 85 destinations. The safety record of the airline is good in recent years, although in 2010, an Ethiopian Airlines flight, flying from Beirut to Addis Ababa crashed into the Mediterranean Sea soon after taking off in stormy weather and with the loss of all 90 persons on board. The cabin service and conditions are a good standard. Inflight entertainment is good with video options on personalised TV monitors and music channels available on the newer planes. There are two categories of ticket available on flights - Business and Economy Class. The airline's website is user friendly and easy to make a flight booking.
