Cyprus Airways is the national carrier of Cyprus with headquarters based in Nicosia. The airline began operating in 1948 as a state owned company. Through the early period of Cyprus Airways there was investment and operation assistance from BEA (British European Airlines), providing also a number of aircraft for the airline over many years. The invasion of Cyprus by Turkish forces in 1974 brought the airline to its knees and decimated the aircraft fleet. From this difficult position Cyprus Airways over the following decades began again with Government investment to build up a new aircraft fleet. The progress the airline has made was reflected at the 2012 Skytrax World Airline Awards,held in the UK,when Cyprus Airways was rated fifth Best European Regional Airline and fifth Best Southern European Airline.
Cyprus Airways is considered a 3 star airline with an aircraft fleet of 11 planes ( April 2012 ) and travelling to 28 destinations. The safety record of the airline is good, with no recent incidents or accidents recorded to date. The cabin service and conditions are a good standard with good passenger approval. Inflight entertainment has video available on spaced screens. Complimentary meals are available on flights. There are two categories of ticket available on flights - Business and Economy Class.
