  Avianca (Aerovias Nacionales de Colombia) is the flag carrier of Colombia, with headquarters based at Bogota. The airline is the second oldest in the world, beginning opeartions in 1919, under the name of SCADTA(Soceidad de Colombo-Alemana de Transporte Aereo). Today Avianca is the largest airline in Colombia and one of the major airlines in Latin America. The airline made gradual progress over the years in size of aircraft fleet and air routes and in 1940 merged with the airline SACO, with the result that the airline was renamed as Avianca.The years following had further mergers of other airlines making Avianca the main airline in Colombia. In 2004, Avianca due to financial difficulties faced necessary restructuring, in order to meet the current economic pressures. At the recent 2012 Skytrax's World Airline Awards, held in the UK, Avianca were listed as the fourth Best Airline in South America.

  Avianca is considered a 3 star airline with an aircraft fleet of 69 planes (Feb 2012 ) and travelling to 77 destinations. The safety record of the airline is good with no incidents and accidents in recent years. The cabin service and conditions are a good standard with high passenger approval. The Inflight entertainment is a good standard with personal TV monitors showing videos, although short haul flights might have limited options.   Lan Airlines is the national carrier of Chile with headquarters based at Santiago.The airline is one of the oldest operating today, being founded in 1929, known then as Linea Aeropostal Santiago-Arica. In 1932, the name changed to the current name of Lan Airlines ( Linea Aerea Nacional de Chile ). The airline over the next years grew in size as a result of acquistions of smaller carriers, to becoming now one of the largest airlines in Latin America. Lan Airlines has now created subsidiaries in other South American countries - Lan Argentina (2005),Lan Colombia (2011),Lan Ecuador (2012)and Lan Peru (1998). This airline has made good progress and at the recent Skytrax 2012 World Airline Awards,held in the UK, was recognised as the second Best Airline in South America.

  Lan Airlines is considered a 3 star airline with a modern aircraft fleet of 152 planes ( April 2012 ) and travelling to 48 destinations. The airline has plans for more new planes to come into service. The airline has a good safety record, although there was a recent incident in 2007, when a Lan Airlines flight had a near miss taking off at New York's JFK airport ,with another plane making a landing there.
