The airline began operations in 2001, serving now mostly domestic flights, although having flights to other South American countries. Since the founding, the airline has expanded in size with airline mergers and being popular with the domestic market. At the 2012 Skytrax World Airline Awards, held in the UK, the runner up Best Low Cost Airline in South America was awarded to Gol.

The safety record is good, although in 2006 a domestic Gol flight collided with a small private jet. The Gol flight crashed into a jungle area, with the result that all on board lost their lives. Tam Airlines is the largest Brazilian airline, with headquarters based at Sao Paulo. The airline began operating in 1976, providing domestic routes for one of the regions in Brazil. Tam Airlines over the following years grew in size and expanded air routes, with the merging of smaller airlines. With the growth of the airline, international routes were opened up, increasing the reputation of Tam Airlines. Most recently there have been merger talks with the large Chilean airline Lan, which in June 2012 resulted in the formation of the LATAM Airlines Group, as the parent company of Tam Airlines. This merger allows both airlines to operate independently from each other. The progress that Tam Airlines has made was reflected at the 2012 Skytrax World Airline Awards,held in the UK, by winning the awards for Best Airline and Best Staff Service for the South American Region.
