Aerolineas Argentinas is the national carrier in Argentina, with headquarters based in Buenos Aires. The airline began operations in 1950, as a state owned company. The airline had steady growth over the following years, increasing the aircraft fleet and destination routes. The Argentine government decided to accept the privatisation of the airline in 1991, by the Iberia led consortium group. Unfortunately this change of ownership was not successful and led to financial difficulties in later years, forcing the Government to take back the airline in 2008. Aerolineas Argentinas has recently had restructuring of the airline to improve its financial performance. At the 2012 Skytrax World Airline Awards,held in the UK, the airline was ranked the sixth Best Airline in South America.

Lan Airlines is the national carrier of Chile with headquarters based at Santiago.The airline is one of the oldest operating today, being founded in 1929, known then as Linea Aeropostal Santiago-Arica. In 1932, the name changed to the current name of Lan Airlines ( Linea Aerea Nacional de Chile ). The airline over the next years grew in size as a result of acquistions of smaller carriers, to becoming now one of the largest airlines in Latin America. Lan Airlines has now created subsidiaries in other South American countries - Lan Argentina (2005),Lan Colombia (2011),Lan Ecuador (2012)and Lan Peru (1998). This airline has made good progress and at the recent Skytrax 2012 World Airline Awards,held in the UK, was recognised as the second Best Airline in South America.
Lan Airlines is considered a 3 star airline with a modern aircraft fleet of 152 planes ( April 2012 ) and travelling to 48 destinations. The airline has plans for more new planes to come into service. The airline has a good safety record, although there was a recent incident in 2007, when a Lan Airlines flight had a near miss taking off at New York's JFK airport ,with another plane making a landing there. The cabin service and conditions are a good standard with high passenger approval. Inflight Entertainment is a good standard with personal TV monitors showing good video options.
