Turkish Airlines is the national airline of Turkey with headquarters based in Istanbul. The airline began operations in 1933, as a state owned company and part of the Ministry of Defence. In 1956 the Turkish government reorganised the airline renaming it as ( Turk Hava Yollari) Turkish Airlines. The years following were difficult years for the reputation of the airline due to poor customer service,hijackings and numerous fatal plane accidents. The new Turkish government elected in 1983 decided to improve the standards of the airline with the introduction of new modern planes into service. With large investment from the government, Turkish Airlines expanded quickly to meet the increasing tourist industry in Turkey. In recent years Turkish Airlines has made great strides being recognised with awards like the recent 2012 Skytrax World Airline Awards winning, Best Airline in Europe and also for Southern Europe. The airline is also ranked seventh Best in the World. Another award given was for the World's Best Economy Premium Class Seat available.
Turkish Airlines is considered a 4 star airline with an aircraft fleet of 180 mostly new planes (July 2012) and travelling to over 200 destinations. The safety record in recent years has been good, although in 2009 a Turkish Airlines flight crash landed due to faulty part at the Dutch Schiphol Airport, with nine fatalities on board.The cabin service and conditions are a high standard with good passenger approval. Catering is a high standard in all cabin areas and meal and drinks on flights are complimentary. Inflight entertainment is a high standard with video options available on individual TV monitors. There are 4 categories of ticket available on flights - First,Business,Premium Economy and Economy Class. The airline's website is user friendly and easy to make a flight booking.
