Air India is the national carrier of India and partly owned by the government of India, with its headquarters based in Mumbai. The airline was founded in 1932 and initially known as Tata Airlines. Air India with the backing of the Indian Government, has expanded over the years with new planes and additional destinations. In recent years with difficulties in the global economy, the airline had to deal with the financial problems facing it. In 2001 the airline was put up for sale but no reasonable offers came forward. However in 2007, the airline merged with Indian Airlines, with the intention of creating a more stronger airline to compete with the major airlines. Since then the newly formed airline, still known as Air India,is currently facing substantial accumulated debt, due to the recent merger and recent large plane order.
Air India is considered a 3 star airline with an aircraft fleet of 100 planes currently and travelling to 75 destinations. The safety record is good in recent years with only a minor incident in 2009,which resulted in no injuries. There are three categories of ticket available - Business,First and Economy Class. The cabin staff service is a good standard although cabin conditions do not score as high. Inflight Entertainment options vary in the three different ticket sections. The airline's website is user friendly and makes a flight straightforward to book.

IndiGo is an Indian budget airline, privately owned with its headquarters in Guragaon ( near New Delhi ). The airline only recently commenced operations in 2006 and has made fast progress in the airline industry. The success has been based on keeping running costs low and having attractive low fares. The progress was rewarded at the 2011 Skytrax World Airline Awards held in Paris, with the award of the Best Airline in the Central Asia/India region.
IndiGo is considered a 4 star airline with an aircraft fleet of 48 planes (Nov 2011 ) and travelling to 31 destinations. The airline has placed a large order of 100 Airbus A320 planes last year and planned to be in service for 2015/2016. The safety record of the airline is very good with no incidents to date on record. There is one category of ticket available on the flights - Economy Class. The cabin service and conditions are a good standard for a low cost airline. The airline's website is user friendly and easy to make a flight booking.
IndiGo has made good progress in the few years it has been operating and providing travellers with low cost fares and a good service. Although limited to India's regional destinations, the airline is making efforts to open up routes to worldwide destinations in the coming years.

Jet Airways is the largest airline in India and its headquarters is based in Mumbai. The airline commenced operations in 1993, as the main rival to the state owned Indian Airlines. Jet Airways was successful in the early years and was in a position to purchase the airline, Air Sahara in 2008,which expanded Jet Airways further. The recent recession has held back the further expansion of this airline.

The safety record is very good with only an incident in 2007,which resulted in no loss of life. There are three categories of ticket available - First,Business and Economy Class. The cabin service and conditions are a good standard, with First and Business Class scoring at a higher level,with quality seat comfort and access to flat beds and access to the latest Inflight Entertainment facilities. Economy Class has also access to many TV channels,movies,audio channels watched on personal TV monitors. The airline's website is user friendly and easy for booking a flight.

At the 2011 Skytrax World Airline Awards in Paris, Kingfisher Airlines was awarded the Best Airline and Best Service Excellence for the Central Asia/India region. The low-cost airline, Kingfisher Red owned by Kingfisher Airlines was also the runner up for Best Low-Cost Airline for the Central Asia/India region. However, these awards have come at a price, as in 2011 Kingfisher Airlines has been faced with major financial difficulties and the outlook in the coming year does not look promising for this airline.
Kingfisher Airlines is considered a 5 star airline with an aircraft fleet of 66 planes (Aug 2010) and travelling to 71 destinations. The aircraft fleet is very new, providing passengers with excellent conditions on board. There are plans to increase the aircraft fleet with more new planes in the coming years. The safety record is very good with only a minor incident in 2009, which resulted in no injuries. There are three categories of ticket available - First,Business,Economy Class. The cabin service and conditions are very good in all areas onboard. Seat comfort and Inflight Entertainment score very high with flat beds available in the First Class area. The Inflight Entertainment is very good in all ticket categories with many TV channels,movies,games,music channels etc, available on personal TV monitors.For First Class passengers even pajamas and in seat massagers are available.
Kingfisher Airlines is one of a special group of airlines, providing the highest level of comfort and service to passengers travelling worldwide. Although there might be dark financial clouds on the horizon, this is a an airline worth considering when booking a flight.
