Air Berlin has now become Germany's second largest airline, with its headquarters based in Berlin. The airline commenced operations in 1978 and strangely began as a United States airline, with headquarters in Miami (Florida), due to West Berlin's status during the Cold War. The airline moved its headquarters to Berlin in 1985 and after reunification of Berlin in 1990, the airline was re-registered under German law. Air Berlin with the purchase of the airlines, DBA and LTU began to expand with a larger fleet of planes and increase the network of worldwide routes. This progress has resulted in Air Berlin becoming one of the up and coming airlines in Europe with the award at Skytrax's 2011 World Airline Awards in Paris of runner up European Best Low-Cost Airline.
